I bring up the subjects of child support, lesbians, and low pay because these issues were cited in the lamest excuses I’ve ever heard for either refusing a job offer or quitting a job.
Later, we’ll go over the virtues of working, but right now, I just wanna pick on people who shamelessly shun it.
CHILD SUPPORT
A longtime jobless friend of a friend passed on several employment opportunities because most of his paycheck would be dedicated to child support.
In another instance, the father of a friend’s son chose unemployment over child support deductions.
As a woman who has no relationship with her biological father and the daughter of a mother who received child support, this attitude is particularly disgusting to me.
Your experience may be different, but if you have to force the mother or father of your child(ren) to help cover their expenses via court order, it’s likely you’re also doing the heavy lifting when it comes to general parenting.
That’s not fair!
When the non-custodial parent takes the position they’re not going to work because they must financially provide for their child, it puts the burden on the other parent to cover 100% of child related expenses. Or, let’s be honest, the government, i.e., the taxpayer, i.e., you and me fill the gap, not only for the kid, but the mother too.
LESBIANS
My cousin quit a good paying job as a forklift driver.
There are an infinite number of reasons to do an infinite number of things. So, I shouldn’t be surprised my cousin’s resignation was motivated by the abundance of lesbians on the job.
Yep. I said it. Lesbians. Oooooo. Boogha, boogha, boogha!
There were simply too many of ‘em in the workplace.
From my understanding, my cousin wasn’t harrassed by anyone. Her work environment wasn’t hostile. The lesbians were just being – you know – lesbian. How dare they not transform into a heterosexual during the workday.
I’ve grown to expect this kind of behavior from the uber-religious.
But you wanna hear something crazy? My cousin is neither spiritual nor religious.
Psalm 1:1 says “blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly nor stands in the way of the sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”
If you’re trying to live “right,” maybe I can see why you’d strive to distance yourself from the abominable.
But my cousin is ungodly.
And she’s a sinner.
She’s a scornful person if there ever was one.
What a deceitful, harlot like her could find so despicable about homosexuality she’d quit her job is beyond comprehension.
Then again, I guess what your coworkers do in their bedroom is good enough reason to forgo honest work as long as you have the effing government, i.e., the taxpayers, i.e., you and me to pick up the slack.
LOW PAY
One of my mom’s clients was making $6 an hour when she quit her job. Her reason, “the job didn’t pay anything.”
No, she didn’t have another job lined up.
Yes, $6 an hour is greater than $0 an hour.
When you’re afforded luxuries such as damn-near-free child chare, food stamps, and housing assistance (Section 8), you don’t have to worry yourself with mathematical arguments like:
Something > Nothing
You can snub the kind of work that’s generally available to low skilled laborers.
Doing so is perfectly logical when you have the government, i.e., the taxpayer, i.e., you and me to subsidize your laziness.

That's a good one. Another one of my cousins thought getting to work by 8:00 AM was too early. Um, that's normal!
Amen!! I had a family member use the low pay argument. It was an appalling argument kin to "I don't get out of bed for less than $10/hour". As you would probably guess, her skill set didn't demand that wage in the market place. She stayed in bed until her unemployment checks ran out and she was evicted. Keep up the excellent work Shawanda, love your blog!

Wow – pretty bad. I always support making decisions to follow your dreams, but sometimes you have to be realistic and work hard for a while before it is possible to quit and make ends meet.
I do too. I think it's awesome when people have the guts to pursue their passion. But before that, the bills have to be paid.
I've heard "it will mess up my unemployment."
I can see holding out for a better job if the one offered will interfere with your ability to pursue more gainful employment opportunities. However, you have to be careful. I know someone who was refusing job offers a mere two months before his unemployment benefits ran out. I mean, come on.
I have a relative who refuses to work. In his opinon, the government should take care of him because he's such a brilliant intellect and a gifted historian. Really.
