You’re Never Too Old, Fat, or Broke to Change Direction

by Shawanda Greene

You probably don’t know this about me, but I’m extremely stingy with praise.

Unless you achieve a truly remarkable feat, in my opinion, you’re unimpressive and thus, unworthy of the energy required to exalt your meager accomplishments.

After congratulating a fellow gym member on his 6-year long physical transformation, we engaged in some light chitchat.

I learned how he lost 90 pounds and metamorphosed from an overweight, 50-something year old, abnormally sweaty mouth breather to a ripped beast. (I don’t exactly know the guy’s age. I can never tell with black men. Suffice it to say, he’s up there.)

Here’s his secret:

Eat a ton of fruits and vegetables, eliminate processed carbohydrates from your diet, and exercise two hours a day, seven days a week.

Whoa.

But still, this man accomplished what many have refused to even attempt.

There are tons of excuses to frolic in mediocrity. A particularly idiotic one is, “It’s too late. I’m old. Whaaah.”

“By the time I clean up my credit history, I’ll be 40-years old.”

“By the time I obtain my bachelors degree, I’ll be 50-years old.”

“By the time I reach my goal weight, I’ll be 60-years old.”

So, uh, if you don’t do these things time stands still?

Of course not!

The Lord willing, ten years from now I’m gonna be 41-years old. And you . . . you’re gonna be whatever age you are now PLUS ten.

If you gave up on a dream because you erroneously reasoned you’re too old, stop that foolish thinking right now, and start taking the necessary steps to move closer to your goal.

A year from now you will wish you had started today. – Karen Lamb

I love this post. I get sick of people whining about their age. Isn’t the alternative (death) worse? So, I like it when people just deal with where they’re at and get over whatever hangups they have.

You are so right! It’s never too late to start something until you’re dead. Thanks for the reminder!

I always believed that it is never too late to start reaching for your goal and turning your dream into reality. I started out with my master’s degree after I got married. I was already on my 30′s then. Three years ago, my husband and I decided to lead a frugal life and start saving more for our retirement, children’s college fund, investment, etc. We are now at a better financial state three years ago before we made that life-changing decision. Giving up on a dream is worse than taking that one step towards that dream.

Its all about your mind set. If you believe its not worth it or you’ll never reach your goal, then you won’t. Positivity is the key to motivation. Great article- people need to understand that it doesn’t matter what your goal is, you have to think you can do it and you’re right it doesn’t matter where you are right now only where you want to be.

I think the excuses are just there so they don’t have to be held liable for anything. A lot of people don’t want to change so they make the im too old blah blah blah crap. Set goals and plan how to tackle them. Half the things we make excuses about are easier to achieve then we think or should I say easier then we are willing to put effort into.

I agree we can’t use our age as an excuse!
I’m in my mid fifties (ouch, that hurt!), but
I’m just starting a blog and beginning a business with an
Etsy store (A Pet Bakery). I’m having fun checking out new adventures.
I want to get some financial independence.
Thanks for the post!

Excuses are ridiculously easy to make, progress isn’t. What’s worth having doesn’t come easy!
